Flickr Video

So the newest thing on the block in Flickrland is a new video upload feature. Wha? Everyone’s favourite photo site is turning into a photo and video site?! Uh.

Today I’ve been invited to about two anti-video discussion groups. Between them they have about 20,000 members. In 24 hours, that isn’t a bad membership increase. The groups are full of people protesting the decision to have video. People are posting anti-video images to their galleries.

People are generally whining.

Youtube?

The main point of all the whining is that videos should stick to youtube and the ilk. Otherwise people will be posting mobile phone clips of kids knifing grannies. Or people waving their arses and boobs around. Or just generally crap stuff.

Flickr is limiting video posting to the people with paid accounts; and clips are limited to 90 seconds (to stop people posting movies/music videos/copyrighted stuff). I don’t know how this is offending people so much. I don’t think porn-spammers and hoodlums will be paying for flickr accounts when they can just post their (much longer) clips on the free youtube/xxxxtube/whatevertube sites.

Uh

The thing that really annoys me about all this is that no-one is forcing people to watch any videos. Flickr is already full of filthy rude images. If people want to see that stuff, they’ll look for it. It would be *exactly* the same with and rude videos. Gosssssh.

Me?

I’m still slightly undecided. I’m erring towards thinking that it _could_ be a good idea.

If one of my contacts posts a video of them waving, or saying hello or something, I’m more likely to watch it than clicking off to an external video site to watch.

Personally, I’m always getting asked questions about my photos - how I did them etc. I could write how I did it. *Or* I could film myself doing it. And then post it in the same place as my photos. Instead of a totally seperate site (which needs more accounts/passwords etc).

I probably won’t be posting videos of me knifing grannies or waving my arse around.

A lot of people seem to like moaning for the sake of moaning. The site doesn’t seem to be full of crap after the first day of video and my contacts have just posted the odd one here and there between their usual photographs. I can’t see that changing much. I’ve found some genuinely creative good stuff as well.

I was uncertain about it… until I actually read what they wanted it to be.

I like their description of a ‘90 second photo’.

Yeah it could go mental and all YouTubey… but with the Flickr Community I doubt it will happen. Plus with Flickr you only ever really see what you want to see, stuff isn’t ever force fed to you. It’ll be dead easy to ignore.

I’m giving it a cautious thumbs at 45 degrees from vertical.

Hmmm… “A 90 Second Photo” yessss…. curious! - I gave it a swift thumbs down and then slowly turned my thumb more towards sort of level when I didn’t see any video… well, not much… like someone up there said - i’m not being force fed, so it’s OK… so far!

If Flicker comes out with something new and different comparing to Youtube, so then they might success in their project otherwise it’s dead as yahoo video!

something else, how it’ll be looks like when there’s photos and videos on the same site like flicker?

It’s gonna mixed up and Youtube will get the opportunity to update their site as they did lately ;)
