Everyone has been wondering how I do some of my photos on flickr, in particular, some of my recent self portraits. Here I explain how.

As you can see from this image, it has an awesome blue background.

Some people spend loads of money on huge A1 sheets of coloured papers. I can’t afford to do things like that. Instead I use my little desk lamp and some coloured “gels”. I mentioned them in a post about boats a little while ago.

The blue just came out *really* well because my wall is already blue-ish :)

New lens

Another ingredient is my new lens. Recently purchased a Canon 50mm f/1.8 and it’s awesome for portraits. I will do another post about it soon.

  1. That’s the lens I’ve got my eye on as my first purchase… obviously when we actually get our 400d (hopefully this month… but for Chrimble - booo!) Mainly cos of the big hole in it, and that it only costs like £65. The Missus wants to take nice photos of her food and it seems ideal for that sort of thing. Nice to see you approve and that you’ll be writing some more about it!

  2. So…basically you just set the “gels” on the lamp to creat the color, but what are the “gels”? Are they particularly for this purpose or for something else???

  3. Anthony - I imagine it would be great for food, but it doesn’t have a very good focussing distance. I’ll do a cheeky food shot in my write up :) Tizrah - they’re basically small coloured pieces of plastic used on theatre lights. They’re also great for putting on torches :)
